About Financial Impulse

Who’s behind Financial Impulse?

Hi there! My name is Joyce, and I’m a content marketer and freelance writer who loves to write about—you guessed it—personal finance.

A little about me and my path to creating Financial Impulse:

I’m a first-generation American who mostly grew up in a rural small town before moving to the suburbs in high school. My parents, both immigrants from Taiwan, did their best to provide for our family: my dad worked in a manufacturing plant, and my mom worked at Wal-Mart for nearly 20 years (her first role as a cashier started out at $6/hour).

In my senior year of college, my dad passed away from pancreatic cancer. His passing is among the most formative experiences of my life; though incredibly painful, it spurred so much personal growth.

For starters, I began taking a large role in managing my mom’s finances. And in the years that immediately followed, I began consuming all kinds of personal finance content—in the news and through books, blogs, and Reddit.

As I dove in, I learned about the U.S.’s dismal personal finance statistics, aspects of which I saw reflected in my own life. For instance, my taking out student loans without understanding their ramifications, and my confusion about how retirement benefits worked when I started my first full-time job.

I remember feeling dumb and incompetent because I didn’t know how to navigate these important areas… And knowing that many others find themselves in a similar position, I wanted to create Financial Impulse as a resource and guide for those interested in getting a better grasp of their money.

It means a lot that you’ve taken the time to explore the site, so thank you for stopping by!
